Wuxi Electronics & Instruments Industry Co. (WEII) is a new and high-tech integration of technology, industry, trade, and education with a total capital of RMB?D212 million ($25.5 million). It has a strong team of technical and research staff among whom several hold doctorate or master??s degree. Since its foundation in October of 1992, WEII has been devoting itself to the introduction, research and development of microelectronic products, electronic products for power industry, complete electronic equipment, information-oriented electronic products, electronic protective devices, computer software, and so forth. Great achievements have been made in recent years. It made a turnover of RMB?D1.6 billion ($192 million) in 2000. The company has been actively seeking foreign cooperation and investment to initiate joint ventures (JV). December 1994 witnessed the establishment of Wuxi Sharp Electronic Components Co., Ltd. (WSEC), a JV between WEII and Sharp Co. (Japan) with an investment totaling $36 million. It is the largest domestic producer of B/W and color STN liquid crystal display (LCD) modules and new type tuners. In November, 1997, Siemens Vacuum Interrupters (Wuxi) Co., Ltd., a DM27 million JV by WEII and Siemens AG from Germany was launched. It is mainly engaged in the production of ceramic vacuum interrupters.
